The benefits
The benefits of practising Tai Chi are many and numerous and begin to arrive as soon as you first commence your study. For many the first few sessions will be felt in the legs , particularly the thighs as much work is practised in low stances, this may also be felt in the lower pelvis as the pelvic floor gets a gentle work out too.Balance is improved as much of your practise you will be standing on one foot or the other and the slow transference of weight will build better control of leg movement. The postures are quite demanding as they require synchronizatin between limbs as well as a good deal of coordination all round, this pays off as you begin to gain an improved understanding of how you move and what constitutes safe movement.
So balance, coordination and a gentle toning of the muscles all arrive as gifts for your hard practise.Alongside these comes an increasing awareness of posture and breath control which in turn lead to an improved sense of general well being. The complex movement patterns of the linked postures also sharpen cognitive functioning.
In brief , you will stand straighter, breath more easily , move more gracefully and think more clearly in proportion to the effort and practise you put in , one day's practise reaps one day's benefits; to fill the piggy bank you need to drop in a lot of pennies before you can have a good spend up!
Longer term benefits are just as desirable. Long term practise should help to calm you and make you a more tolerent person less liable to extreme fluctuations of mood and temper, although to date my halo has not arrived in the post , I do like to think I am eassier going for my many years of practise.
The meditational side of the art also holds many treasures that await your discovery and of course , getting back to the practical, the self defence aspect of Tai Chi may one day be of use should you need it .Tai Chi has a great deal of benefits to the practitioner from the practical to the esoteric and the deeper your study the more profound are the gifts laid at your feet.
